Gov. Rendell yesterday signed into law tougher gun penalties, including a mandatory 20-year sentence for anyone convicted of shooting - or shooting at - law enforcement officers.
House Bill 1845 also increases penalties for other gun-related crimes and closes a loophole that allowed some mentally ill individuals to buy guns.
I'm sure they loved this endorsement.

Not to stereotype ourselves...but...we really care about the Second Amendment in the beautiful Lone Star State.

The debate surrounding the Second Amendment is making a comeback as Election Day nears and voters at McBride's Guns in Austin were passionate about their guns.
Store managers said sales at McBride's Guns have shot up over the last six months thanks to the person who would have least wished it to happen.
Voter Roger Mendelson said the increased gun sales recently has more to do with who is likely to take charge of the White House and gun owners are planning ahead.
"Mr. Obama voted for a severe handgun regulation in the state of Illinois," Mendelson said.

What’s the difference between a bulldog and a soccer mom?
In the case of Meleanie Hain, it’s a loaded sidearm.
On Sept. 11, Hain created a stir among other parents when she wore her weapon — a loaded Glock 26, about the size of an adult hand — in a holster to her 5-year-old daughter’s soccer game at Optimist Park in Lebanon, also known as Southwest Park.
Although she did not break a law by carrying the weapon openly, she is now facing the loss of her concealed-weapons permit. But she is not giving up without a fight.
“I’m just a soccer mom who has always openly carried (a firearm), and I’ve never had a problem before,” she said. “I don’t understand why this is happening to me.”
Parents were upset by the presence of the weapon at the game being played by 4- and 5-year-olds, said Charlie Jones, who coaches one of three under-age-6 teams, known as U6, in the Lebanon Recreation Youth Soccer program.
“More than one parent was upset,” he said. “I did not see it, but it was brought to my attention.”

While running for Senate in 2004, Obama called for "national legislation" to prohibit citizens from carrying concealed weapons at all. In 2008, he affirmed that concealed carrying "creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could [get shot during] altercations."
Obama also supports the reinstatement of a 1994 ban on a variety of semi-automatic pistols and rifles characterized as "assault weapons." McCain voted against the ban, which expired in 2004, and continues to oppose it.
Obama's vice presidential pick, Sen. Joe Biden, has been a stalwart believer in gun control throughout his Senate career, offering steady support for the Brady Bill and championing legislation to renew the assault weapons ban.

NEW ORLEANS — City officials have agreed to return hundreds of firearms that police officers confiscated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, part of a deal to resolve a lawsuit filed by gun lobbying groups.
The settlement agreement filed Tuesday in federal court calls for the National Rifle Association and Second Amendment Foundation to drop their case if the city follows a plan for returning guns to owners who had them seized by police after the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane.
Both sides also are asking U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier to sign off on the pact and issue a permanent injunction barring the city from seizing lawfully possessed firearms. Barbier didn't immediately rule on the agreement, which doesn't involve a monetary award.

Like many wives of gun owners [Nancy Schoenke] is an independent thinker and does not like guns. She took a seat on the board of the Brady Campaign but soon became frustrated with the group’s lack of progress. Ray told her that progress would not be made until gun owners were allowed to bring their common sense perspective to the table. As a result, Nancy closed the family checkbook, resigned from the Brady board, and encouraged Ray [Schoenke] to start AHSA...
John Rosenthal an AHSA founding board member was also the founder of Boston based Stop Handgun Violence, a gun violence prevention group that has advocated some of the nation’s strictest gun laws... Like Nancy Schoenke, he too served on the Brady board until frustration set in. John quit Brady and helped finance and build AHSA. In the spring of 2007, John resigned from the AHSA board over some fundamental policy issue differences and is now devoting his efforts to Stop Handgun Violence.
