Just took the 700 to the range yesterday, mostly just to put it through its paces, ensure the bolt & trigger mechanisms work smoothly, etc. I'm happy to report that it's working just fine, but I don't have a scope on it yet, so it's not possible to aim it with any level of accuracy at this point.

Of course, there's a huge variety of scopes on the market, and a whole lot of good ones. I'm hoping to get a scope that can match the capabilities of the rifle (both of which will exceed my own skill--but that's another issue entirely) The consensus seems to be that the Remington SPS Varmint is capable of around 0.75 MOA out of the box.

When I got to the range yesterday, I'd pretty much settled on the Leupold VX-II (see above) in 3-9X 40mm, matte finish. The salesman at the range was convinced that I wouldn't be happy with the VX-II, although he was a big proponent of the VX-III (see below). In fact, he said I'd likely be happier with a Bushnell 3200 than a VX-II. When I got back to World HQ, I did some more research. I didn't find many negative comments about the VX-II on the 'net, but did find a few. I didn't find anyone with anything negative to say about the Leupold VX-III. The downside is the cost. The VX-III runs about $200 more.

Worth the extra cash? Not worth it? I look forward to your comments.

Sticking with Leupold line - minimum scope is a VX-III but pay an extra $100 and get yourself Leupold precision mark 4 rifle scope. I recommend 3.5-10X40mm w/ mil-dot reticle. Don't forget get yourself a mil-dot master range calculator ($30). You need to get a laser range finder from leica (1200 meter model w/ scan capability - over $300-$400). I'm using a IOR valdada 10X42mm scope with mp8 reticle on my .308 DPMS AR-10T.

I recommend this line of Leupold scope because of its target knobs - 1/4" click adjustments. It is quicker to adjust scope at various ranges (drills range from 100-1000 yards). That picture of VX-III w/ luminated reticle has no target knobs

I have a Remington 700 BDL Varmintmaster (1970's vintage) in .243, and I have a Leupold VX-II 3x9 on it. Unless you are a serious range rat, the VX-III is simply not necessary. I can shoot ten rounds through a single ragged hole about the size of a dime at 100 yards with mine if I have a bench to rest on. You ought to be able to do the same, though you neglected to mention what yours is chambered for. Some of those fancy-schmancy varmint rounds can be more accurate than my .243, but I use mi

Leupold MARK IV 3.5-10x Mil-Dot or TMR reticle. Can't go wrong.

I have a VX-III on my Remington BDL and my Dad has a VX-II on his, about the only real difference I can tell is that the VX-III is much better in low light. Otherwise punching paper there is no real difference.

I dont have a ton of experience with scopes, but I bought a VX-II several years ago. I have never seen a crisper brighter scope. Every one of my friends that look thru it want one for their rifle.
