When my home was broken into a while back, one of the losses was my beloved Remington 870 Express pump-action 12-gauge. I've been wanting to replace it for a while now. I just feel naked without a shotgun. I mean, how stupid would I feel if the zombie hordes showed up unexpectedly, and here I am without a reliable scattergun? 100% stupid.

So, after doing a little research of comparable offerings, I settled on the 870 Express Synthetic a while back. This model is, in many respects, a less-expensive civilian version of Remington's popular 870P (Police) model, with an 18" barrel and a "six plus one" capacity (six rounds in the tubular magazine plus one in the chamber). Like the 870P model, the 870 Express Synthetic also has a parkerized finish and synthetic furniture.

The Remington 870 Express is built on the same basic pump action design first launched by Remington as the 870 Wingmaster back in 1950. Since that time, Remington has sold over NINE MILLION 870s, making it Remington's most popular model of all time and one of the most popular firearms ever. By way of comparison, approximately four million Remington Model 700 bolt action rifles have been sold over the years.

"This end toward zombies."

Operation of the Remington 870 is simple and efficient. The gun feeds from a six-round tubular magazine under the barrel. Racking the forend backward moves the bolt back from the chamber, and then pops a shell out of the magazine and into the lower portion of the receiver.

As the forend is moved forward, the shell is raised up to align with the chamber...

and then chambered...

...at which point the bolt locks in place and the gun is ready to fire.

When the forend is racked rearward again after firing, the extractor pulls the shell from the chamber and ejects it out the side aperture. If there is another shell available in the magazine, it will be moved into position to be chambered, as shown above.

It's a very sweet weapon. When the zombie hordes come steppin' down my street, they'd best keep on steppin...
