Thanks for all the input. Based on the feedback, and other research I've done on the web, I'm planning to go with the Springfield Armory XD.

I'm pretty old school, and I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the classic Beretta/Taurus lines and the feel of a metal frame gun. That said, there are times when you just have to "step into the future," and this may be one of those times.

There's a gun show this weekend, and if I come across one of these at the right price, I may just have to pick one up.

Of course, there remains the age-old question: WHICH CALIBER? I'm leaning toward .40 S&W, but I'm open to being persuaded otherwise.

Thoughts?

Go with .45.

I've been looking at this as well along with the more expensive HK P2000sk. I favor the 9mm but Ive been looking for a compact 45 for a carry gun. The 45ACP XD is reportedly very inaccurate due to front sighting above 10 yards--you would expect to take it to a gunsmith for better sights.

The .40 is the way to go.

.45 if your going for protection. It'll drop a man regardless of the drugs he's using.

For availability and sheer stopping power, my choice is the .45ACP.

My brother has a 9mm Springfield Arms subcompact. Because of our stubby-fingered hands "fit for an axe, not a guitar" as my mom once said, the grip fit him much better.

Let me know if one of these meets your needs (1,754 XD's in 54 models of 40W

There isn't much size difference in the pistol, so go for stopping power with a .45ACP.

BTW, I own a 9mm Sig P226 and if I didn't already have that, I'd buy the SA-XD in 45ACP in a heartbeat.

As for cost, don't sweat that the XD is lower priced. It's a great gun. Just as accurate as the SIG, IMHO (they use the same type of lockup mechanism).

Works 4 me.

My local gun dealer said that the Taurus company gives awful customer service and recommended Smith and Wesson instead. Just FYI.

The XD is a good weapon. I'm a .45 guy myself - but I've run the gamit over the years. I still own 9's and a Glock .357 SIG. Never had a .40 - never saw any reason to. If I want more than a 9, I'll carry my .357 or my .45. I just don't get the point of a short 10mm - kinda like the .380 to me....
